Maurice Rollinat (1843−1903) was a French poet and musician. In 1880's he lived in the center of Latin Quarter, in the midst of the bohemian artistic society of Paris, belonged to the group Les Hydropathes, formed by Émile Goudeau, was one of the founders of the famous cabaret Chat Noir. Rollinat earned a spectacular, though short-lived fame with his book Neuroses (1883). He composed music to some of the poems from the book and performed them in Sara Bernard's salon and in Chat Noir. Some praised him as genius, some derided as a mere imitator of Baudelaire. In his poems, peaceful scenes of country life clash violently with sinister grotesques produced by the monster city.
